Questions people ask
- What is the best LLM on the leaderboard?
- On 24 Oct 2026, Claude Opus 5.5 (max effort) by Anthropic leads the BenchLeader Index at 72.6 ±5.8.
- Why are so many models tied at the top?
- Because the evidence cannot separate them: 29 configurations score within the leader's margin of error on 24 Oct 2026. The ± next to each score is how much its benchmark results disagree; two models inside each other's margin are a tie on quality, and price or speed decides.
- How is the BenchLeader Index calculated?
- Each benchmark's scores are standardised so that 50 is the average evaluated model and 15 points is one standard deviation; the benchmarks are averaged within their category (coding, reasoning, maths and so on), and the categories into the BenchLeader Index. A model needs at least five independent results across at least two categories to be ranked, and thin evidence is shrunk toward 50. The full method is on the methodology page.
